We began our love affair with MAINE COONS with a mix breed rescue named Cash. He was a Maine Coon /Siberian cross that had fallen into a bad breeder situation as a 4 month old kitten. We were fosters and rescuers working with several organizations at that time, offering our farm as a safe haven while loving homes were found. During those years we worked with both domestic pet and equine rescues. When Cash came, he never left, and our hearts were forever changed. Little did we know at that time that we would embark on a four year journey of research, and education of every genetic detail and ancestry of the breed, or that it would lead us to where we are today.
Our cattery name " FEATHER HILL MAINE COONS" lends to our farms name, Feather Hill Farm. My background is avian genetics and breeding. Now retired from birds, but with a solid reputation and internationally recognized for our line of Croad Langshan, a rare breed of poultry, we look forward to spending the next segment of our life with our wonderful MAINE COONS!
We are a proud TICA registered cattery. We are located on 44 beautiful acres in the hills of Southeast Ohio. Our beloved Maine Coons live directly with us, in our home, enjoying every advantage that these Gentle Feline Giants deserve.
Allot goes into which cats can and or should be bred. Just because a cat can be bred, doesn't mean it should.
Our breeding cats are tested for hereditary and congenital disorders including but not limited to, HD, HCM, PKD and SMA . We also conduct x-ray, ultrasound, along with DNA testing. This however does not guarantee that your Maine Coon won't EVER be affected by these. HCM ( cardiac) and PK ( kidney disease ) is also subject to lifestyle, environment and diet. Just like us humans.
While DNA testing is important, the echo screenings are extremely necessary, because you can only DNA test for some genes of each hereditary disease, but with the screenings you can be certain every time that the heart or kidneys look healthy. Therefore, we strongly advise that you choose a breeder who does both. We recommend that all at owners do so as well throughout the life of their cat. regardless of breed.
